2021: Recovery and Rebound

The global economy rebounded strongly in 2021, expanding by roughly 6% as demand returned and stimulus took effect. Construction and industry led much of the recovery, supported by public infrastructure spending and a wave of postponed private investment.

The rapid restart also strained supply chains: prices for steel, energy and freight rose sharply and equipment lead times lengthened — early signs of the inflation that would define the following year.
